The Danish process in plain English

Know the steps before you start

We deliver the training. Your municipality and the Danish Road Traffic Authority handle the official parts of the application and the tests. This page sets out who is responsible for what, so nothing catches you out.

The process, step by step

  1. Choose your category and course

Pick car or motorcycle, your location, the course format and the transmission. Check the full cost and the test languages before you commit.

  2. Enrol and get your plan

You get a confirmation email with the course, the price and the payment schedule. Anyone starting from 1 July 2026 follows the modernised modular programme.

  3. Arrange your documents

Usually an application, identification, an approved photo, a medical certificate and a first-aid certificate. Students under 18 need consent from a parent or guardian, and special cases can need more.

  4. Learn the theory and the driving

The two support each other. Attend the required activities and use the feedback you get to work on the specific skills you need.

  5. Follow your module plan

On the modernised programme, the module plan records your progress and your next step. Your instructor confirms when you are ready to sit the test.

  6. Take the theory test

Once the requirements and documents are in place, your instructor helps you book it. Check the time, the location, the identification you need and the language.

  7. Take the practical test

You show that you can drive safely, legally and on your own. Confirm the test car, the costs and the meeting point beforehand.

  8. After the result

When you pass, follow the official information about your temporary entitlement and your physical licence. If a test does not go your way, you get feedback, the cost of a new attempt and help planning it.
